Emergencies can and do happen. In our area it would be wise to prepare for earthquakes, house fire, wildland fire, and winter storms among others. These resources offer preparation tips and best practices.

Ready.gov

Ready.gov provides great general information about preparing for emergencies of all kinds. They provide information on making disaster plans and supplies you should have ready in your emergency kit.

Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms save lives and property. At a minimum a smoke alarm should be installed on each floor and in each bedroom.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is tasteless, colorless, silent and deadly. We recommend installing carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Please remember that you should never use your grill indoors (even when the power is out) and make sure your fireplace is working properly.

Red Cross

The Red Cross offers assistance after disasters around the world. But they also offer classes in first aid and CPR that can teach you important skills to deal with emergencies in your own home.

Skagit County DEM

The Skagit County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) offers training and assistance to response organizations during emergencies. In addition you can sign up for emergency alerts for events on Fidalgo Island and around the county.

Puget Sound Energy

PSE provides electrical service to our area. Downed power lines are never safe. Even when the power is out you shouldn’t touch or drive over downed power lines. They can be re-energized without any notice.
